  1. I fully agree – start where you are most certain can demonstrate value, ideally with a minimum of resistance.

    I started with project (risk) management, and liaised with a team of project managers to design a systematic approach. An early execution example was pushing this approach into IT project management. Formerly, the company had used an rather inward looking and unsystematic risk logging (i.e. no real management) approach. One of the first projects affected was the re-start of a major IT project where the first implementation had failed to the extent a complete redo was decided. The first project spent around 18 months and 15 mUSD before it was scrapped. The second, now systematically risk managed project, delivered on time on budget and (most importantly) beyond performance targets.

    Since then, the defined risk managed approach has been deemed mandatory for “strategic” projects, i.e. those exceeding a defined size/complexity/importance.
